Zen Aesthetics

Afro/Zen elements and principals of design that I am taking into consideration while designing pots...

the cool (undisturbed peace, spiritual power)

kanso (simplicity)

fukinsei (asymmetry)

koko (austere sublimity)

shizen (naturalness)

daisuzoku (freedom from routine)

sei-jaku (tranquillity)

yūgen (profound grace)

The fundamntal elements and principals of design most often explored in the western visual arts traditions such as shape, form, line, value, texture, repetition, emphasis etc. are here explored and combined with subtle investigation of the energetic and aesthetic qualities listed above (as popularized by Hisamatsu's classic text "Zen and the Fine Arts.") Deeper exploration into the qualities of shape, form, function and "flow" states, has lead my work on a path to create objects whose intention is to radiate or at least mimic, the healing qualities observed in the myriad cohesive elements and forms found in nature.
